James Heatly and Kat Torrance are in charge of proceedings after a busy session of Men’s and Women’s 1m prelims kick-started the 2019 British Diving Championships in Edinburgh.
The event which makes its return to the Scottish capital since 2017 started with the preliminary rounds of competition on diving’s lowest board, one metre.
The Women’s 1m prelims was first on the bill, and City of Leeds diver Kat Torrance took an early command on the action and despite a slightly missed dive in the third round posted a total score of 244.80 to finish top of the board ahead of this afternoon’s final.
Torrance saved her best until the final round, her Forward 2 ½ Somersaults Pike (105B) clocked a positive 54.60 and meant she finished more than eight points clear of the rest of the field.
Dive London’s Scarlett Mew Jensen ranked second with a score of 236.35 and Desharne Bent-Ashmeil of Crystal Palace Diving Club closed out the top three with 231.95 points.
Edinburgh’s local boy James Heatly got the job done in his home pool. His performance built through the rounds and after his penultimate dive he climbed into top spot where he remained to the finish with a score of 358.60.
Jamaica’s Yona Knight-Wisdom placed second after six rounds of prelims with a score of 356.90, less than two points off Heatly. Sheffield’s Jordan Houlden notched up a morning total of 333.30 points for third.
The final of both events take place during session two of the championships and will decide who claims the title of British Champion 2019.
