Aquatics GB launches Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan in NGB first

27 Jun 2024

Aquatics GB is proud to become the first National Governing Body to have its new Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) approved by UK Sport, in line with their Code for Sports Governance.

The 2024-2028 DIAP - which has gone through thorough reviews by Aquatics GB's own Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Advisory Group, as well as organisational change consultancy team AKD Solutions - aims to enhance diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) across all levels of our organisation, including with athletes, employees and the Board.

Acknowledging the crucial need for diversity and inclusion throughout the aquatic sport community, the Aquatics GB DIAP is structured around three strategic goals: to increase diversity and representation at all levels; to embed and transform inclusion practice; and to develop a socially responsible reputation as an organisation.

While Aquatics GB's 2023 DEI Report showcased significant progress in diversity and inclusion - with key findings including increased representation of ethnically diverse individuals, LGBTQ+ individuals and those with disabilities across the organisation - we recognise the need for continued efforts in this area. Aquatics GB CEO Drew Barrand is confident that the implementation of the DIAP will further drive that development.

"I'm thrilled we are announcing the launch of our Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan. This exciting step forward reflects our ongoing commitment towards fostering an environment where everyone in our organisational feels valued and empowered," said Barrand.

"Embracing diversity and inclusion is not only the right thing to do, it's also a catalyst for innovation, stronger collaboration and enhanced overall performance. We are particularly proud to be the first to formally complete the UK Sport DIAP process, setting the benchmark for excellence in inclusivity within our industry. Having such a plan in place is ultimately about holding ourselves to account to ensure we deliver action and progress, not just words.”

Aquatics GB have developed several key performance indicators to help demonstrate change and hold itself accountable for progress. These include having a fully diverse Board that is reflective of national benchmarks, and enhanced awareness and understanding of DEI benefits through comprehensive training for all staff.

The Board, with advice from the DEI Advisory Group, will annually review progress against the DIAP to ensure continuous improvement in diversity and inclusion practices. This 2024-2028 DIAP launch marks a significant step forward for Aquatics GB - and further showcases our commitment to creating a more inclusive and equitable environment within the aquatic sports community, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to thrive in their role.
