Athlete of the Year – vote for Ollie Hynd

1 Sep 2015

Ollie Hynd deservedly made the shortlist for the inaugural British Swimming Awards off the back of an outstanding year and is after your vote for Athlete of the Year.

Last year, Ollie Hynd added the Commonwealth SM8 200m Individual Medley title to his collection of Paralympic, world and European titles as well as claiming double gold (200m IM, 400m Free) at his second IPC Swimming European Championships in Eindhoven.

He went into the 2015 season hungry to retain his titles in the 200m Individual Medley and the 400m Freestyle and chase the world record set by his brother in 2008.

He qualified for the IPC Swimming World Championships after a promising performance at the British Para-Swimming International Meet.

In Glasgow, Ollie won the British team’s first gold medal as he retained his 200m Individual Medley crown. But it was the 400m Freestyle gold that really hit the mark. He broke his brother Sam’s world record on his way to victory and became double world champion once again.

Hynd commented: “I’ve been shooting for that world record for a while. I had 4:24 in my head as the time I thought I was capable of so I’m so chuffed to go out there and do it.

“I’m sure Sam will be happy for me. I think he’s ready to see it go now. If he hadn’t set the standard so high, I wouldn’t have swum so fast tonight.

“It’s been the best meet of my life so far. I thought I was in great shape coming in because I’d put a lot of work in. You never know until you get in there and swim but I’m delighted that I’ve been able to achieve what I have.”
