Adam Peaty and Francesca Halsall claimed top spots on the podium in the 50m Breaststroke and the 50m Backstroke respectively on the penultimate day of action at the LEN European Aquatics Championships.
World champion and defending European champion Peaty soared to victory after just one length of the London Aquatics Centre pool to capture the gold medal.
Peaty lined up against team-mate Ross Murdoch to the loudest cheers of the night from the sell-out crowd and neither swimmer disappointed.
Peaty quickly moved ahead of the field and completed his gold medal swim in a time of 26.66.
“My start wasn’t the best it could’ve been better but I’m happy to post the same time as yesterday,” Peaty said.
“Everything happens for a reason though I overthought the start and I paid for it. It’s a splash and dash but I’m really happy with that.
“The crowd were absolutely amazing and this event is absolutely perfect for the British swimmers to gain some competition experience and confidence ahead of Rio.”
Peaty was joined on the 50m Breaststroke podium by Murdoch who finished in third to claim the bronze medal in 27.31.
Murdoch said: “That’s my ninth race of the week and I am really happy with how my body has held up during the week. I’m absolutely delighted. It’s been a great week here in London and to have to European Aquatics Championships on home soil ahead of Rio is great.”
The British pair were joined on the podium by Slovenia’s Peter John Stevens, who took silver in a time of 27.09.
Earlier in the session Fran Halsall captured Britain’s first gold medal of the night in the Women’s 50m Backstroke after taking on team-mate Georgia Davies and world medallist Mie Nielsen (Denmark).
Halsall topped the continental podium with a new Championship record and personal best time of 27.57.
“That was exciting,” Halsall said. “I really enjoyed that a lot. It shows I’m in great shape at an important stage in the season.
“I managed to swim in a straight line and deliver a great time tonight, so I’m really happy with that.”
Davies claimed the second British medal of the event with a bronze medal in a time of 27.87.
“I’m pleased with that swim, I’ve been consistent across the three swims so that’s really reassuring for me going forward.
“And obviously it’s great to have two Brits on the podium.”
Halsall and Davies were separated on the podium by Nielsen who took the silver medal in a time of 27.77.
Halsall returned to the pool shortly after collecting her 50m Backstroke medal to compete in the semi-final of the 50m Freestyle where she topped the rankings
Ben Proud continued his successful run in the 50m Freestyle as he took the win in the second semi-final and qualified second fastest overall behind France’s reigning European champion Florent Manaudou.
Proud said: “I didn’t have the best heats swim this morning so I wasn’t looking for any errors in that semi-final and it went my way.
“I’ve been working hard and spending a lot of time in the gym so I feel like I’m progressing well. The team is still in heavy train so to get times like that is positive for me.”
