Eight medals for swimming at EYOF

1 Aug 2015

The swimmers competing at the European Youth Olympic Festival have come home with a total of eight medals including three silvers.

The competition saw Rebecca Sutton win two silver medals in the 200m Fly and the 4x100m Medley Relay along with Ellinor Southward, Katie Robertson and Caitlin Hubbard.

Katie Robertson looked accomplished beyond her years as the 13-year-old took bronze in the girls’ 100m breaststroke.

“It feels amazing to have won bronze. I feel like I’ve done my country proud and I’m really happy,” said Robertson.

“I’m pleased with the performances and the time in the final was 0.2 seconds off the personal best I swam in the nationals in London. It’s the third fastest I’ve ever swam.

“I feel a lot more confident for the 200m tomorrow after that and hopefully I can put in a good performance.

A hat-trick of swimming bronze medals, including a Sophie Hobbah double, rounded off another successful day for Team GB at Tbilisi 2015.

Hobbah’s 200m backstroke and 200m individual medley triumphs came either side of Annalea Davison’s bronze medal swim in the 400m freestyle as Team GB’s meda lcount reached eight at the halfway point of the Festival.

It was Hobbah’s only day of competing at Tbilisi 2015 and the 13-year-old Leeds swimmer was delighted to be bringing home two medals after her first ever international meet.

“I feel absolutely amazing. In the 200m back I turned on the first 50m and felt strong but on the last 50m I couldn’t feel my legs. But I just kept going and when I saw that bronze medal on the screen I was so happy,” said Hobbah.

“The whole experience has been amazing. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity that not many people get to do so being selected was brilliant and I’ve really enjoyed it.

“All my training has gone to plan and my coach has done everything he can to help me so I appreciate that and I’m so happy to won two medals.

“This is the biggest competition that I’ve done and my first international one so it’s been a really good experience. I would love to do something like this again. I need to keep on training hard to try to make it happen.”

Davison will race again in the 200m breaststroke on Friday and came through strongly today in the last 50m to win bronze in 4:19.33.

“That was amazing, I’m so happy.  I went out hard and just tried to hold it and finish strong. I was trying to keep up with the swimmers next to me then overtake in the last 100m,” said the 14-year-old.

“I was hoping for a medal this week but it’s unexpected to get it in the 400m as I was ranked way down but it’s amazing to get the medal. This is definitely the best thing I’ve achieved in swimming.”
