Furber sets sights on Glasgow challenge

30 Mar 2016

The Rio 2016 Paralympic Games is 160 days away and as the sport prepares to look ahead to the pinnacle of its calendar the athletes are finalising the touches to their training ready for the British Para-Swimming International Meet.

National Performance Director Chris Furber took hold of the reigns of Para-Swimming in May 2013 and is about to begin leading the sport to his first Paralympic Trials in post.

The British Para-Swimming International Meet will provide swimmers with the only opportunity to qualify their place on the plane to Rio for the Paralympic Games.

British Para-Swimming achieved its goal of 50% personal best rate at the IPC Swimming World Championships and Furber is now looking for more from his swimmers.

“I think the athletes have picked up where they left off last year,” Furber said. “Once again we’ve been working hard with the swimmers and their coaches to establish what are the key areas they need to develop in order to move their performances on.

“I’ve been pleased to see the swimmers gaining a much better understanding of what works and what doesn’t work for them.”

Furber has seen his sport compete at the National Disability Championships in the winter and was pleased with the performances.

“The focus and attitude this winter has been good but it was apparent that as the year changed to 2016 there was a new level of energy, commitment and focus.

“Every swimmer will need to maintain that focus and energy through the British Para-Swimming International Meet and then onto the Games themselves if they are to fulfil their potential in Rio.

“I’ve also been delighted to see some of the swims of the younger developing athletes so far this year and I’m excited to see if any can step up here and make the team.
