A number of British short-course records were broken as the para-swimming community came together at Sandwell Aquatics Centre to kick-start a new season of competition at the weekend.
The annual aquatics calendar fixture saw a packed schedule of short-course racing take place across 23rd-24th November, as Swim England hosted the 2024 edition of the Aquatics GB Para-Swimming Winter Meet.
Freshly back into the water after their summer breaks, 12 Paris Paralympians were among the more than 100 para-swimming competitors to descend for the weekend on the 2022 Commonwealth Games pool and race for national multi-classification medals.
Starting her new campaign at pace, Scarlett Humphrey lowered the mark on four Women’s S11 short-course British records (S11 50m Freestyle [30.84], S11 100m Backstroke [1:21.90], S11 100m Breaststroke [1:28.23] and S11 100m Butterfly [1:19.75]) among the six events on her programme. Meanwhile, Matthew Redfern (Men’s S13 50m Freestyle [24.86]), Faye Rogers (Women’s SM10 200m Individual Medley [2:28.53]) and Brock Whiston (Women’s SM8 200m Individual Medley [2:40.86]) each took the chance to showcase the fruition of the early-season work on their skills by adding further to the record book revisions.
Rio 2016 Paralympic medallist Abby Kane progressed her short course 100m Backstroke lifetime best to set a new Women’s S13 British record of 1:09.20, with further national marks claimed by Claire Connon (Women’s S4 50m Freestyle [43.40] and 50m Backstroke [56.51]) and Nancy Jubb (Women’s S5 50m Backstroke [44.68]).
Alongside the multiple records achieved and medals awarded in 21 events across the weekend was a meet and greet session, which offered a chance for the new and emerging para-swimmers, parents and spectators to talk and take a photo with the attending Paralympians and their medals – with Birmingham 2022 mascot Perry the Bull also jumping in on the action.
